Day 4 AZ, 1:00 pm
I have to warn Chris and Lori about the dangers awaiting them at the Market Village. My first instinct is to call my brother. I dial his number without checking how many bars I have. My anxiety grows as the phone rings, and when the ringing abruptly stops, my worry ratchets up another level. My phone has lost its signal again. I redial the number, but thereâs no longer a tether to a cell tower. Max also attempts to call Chris with his phone, but he doesnât have enough of a signal to complete the connection either.
Iâm more concerned about my brother than Iâve ever been. When I hadnât heard from him before last night, I thought he was safely sheltered here in the ranger station. Now I know heâs traveling toward a zombie-infested part of Verdant Ridge Park. He might be there already. Thereâs no telling when he and Lori left.
After I give up trying to call him, my phone is down to fifty-two percent charged. I only left it on for half an hour. What could have sucked up so much power? The signal strength indicator keeps flickering between one bar and none at all, and I recall that phones use more power when the reception is weak. Something about it constantly trying to find a signal. As much as I want to keep my phone on in case Chris calls me back, I donât want to run out of power if I really need it. Reluctantly, I shut it off.
I return to the map on the wall with the pushpins. I donât know how accurate the markings are now compared to when the pins were first placed on the map, but assuming that the zombies havenât migrated far from where they were originally sighted, weâre a couple of miles away from the first red pin. A road leads from the ranger station to the campgrounds, and red pins crowd the route. Either zombies prefer to stick to the same paths that people do, or there were just more witnesses along the road to report the sightings. Assuming the former holds some truth, Max and I should avoid that route. We can get close to the Market Village by taking another course without running into as many zombies.
On the other hand, Chris may not know that. He and Lori could have taken the main road.
Max asks, âWhat are you thinking?â
I trace a path from the ranger station to the Market Village that dodges the red pins. âIâm wondering if we should go this way instead of along the main road.â
He examines the safer route. âIs there any reason why we wouldnât want to follow this path?â
âWhat if Chris and Lori took the main road? They could still be on it and need our help, and we wonât know because we went a different way.â
âWouldnât they have chosen your route too? Itâs obviously safer.â
âWhy would they?â Then I understand what Max is hinting at. âYou mean they saw this map too.
